New long distance station Diebsteich

The planned realization of the new Diebsteich long-distance train station will further improve the accessibility of the Bornkampsweg/Ruhrstrasse commercial area, also by means of long-distance trains, and thus further increase the location's favorability. In the eastern part of the area, there is convenient pedestrian access to the new long-distance train station. In July 2014, Deutsche Bahn AG announced the relocation of the Hamburg-Altona long-distance and regional train station by 1.9 km to the north. By 2027, a modern through station with six regional and mainline tracks, two commuter rail tracks and a prestigious reception building will be built on the site of the Diebsteich commuter rail station. The track area of the current terminus station that will be freed up will be used from 2030 for the second construction phase of the new Mitte Altona district, where 1,900 apartments are to be built.

Craftsmen´s yards and trading estate concepts

In Bahrenfeld, immediately adjacent to Neue Mitte Altona, a new craftsmen's and commercial courtyard is being built on an approximately 3,000 sqm site to serve local businesses. The six-story building with a total floor space of about 6,200 sqm will provide numerous workshop spaces and will be built in a stacked design, inspired by the Meistermeile at Offakamp. Two craft businesses have already leased 1,750 sqm². Additional modern rental space in the Bornkampsweg industrial park completes the offer. The neighboring Gewerbehof Kolbenwerk eG provides valuable impetus for participatory and cooperative concepts for craftsmen’s yards and trading estates development, taking into account aspects of historic preservation.

Short distances

Short distances connect the extensive industrial and commercial area Schnackenburgallee with the attractive Otto von Bahrenpark district. The Schnackenburgallee offers important suppliers, customers and services for the location Bornkampsweg/Ruhrstraße, including companies from supply and disposal, the automotive industry, technology and specialized craft businesses. This proximity creates multiple synergies between the neighbouring locations. The former Altona gas plant was discovered in the 1960s by artists who furnished studios and apartments. In the 1990s, the 'Forum Altes Gaswerk' and the Otto von Bahrenpark, a residential and commercial park with restored gas plant buildings and new buildings in the old style, were built.

Potential for development and upgrading

The Bornkampsweg/Ruhrstraße commercial area could benefit from various spill-over effects in the future, triggered by development projects such as the Science City Bahrenfeld, the emerging housing estates Holsten-Areal and Max-Brauer, as well as the trading estate development Kolbenhof eG. These projects could foster an economic ecosystem by attracting skilled workers, businesses and innovation. The proximity to many existing and emerging scientific institutions creates synergies between research and industry, while new residential areas attract workers and boost the local economy. The trading estate developments offer a wide range of work opportunities and promote sustainable economic dynamism.
