Troplowitzstraße/Eimsbüttel industrial and commercial area

In the heart of Hamburg, where Beiersdorf was founded 140 years ago, a new working environment is being created with the Beiersdorf Campus. Bringing together staff from previously two locations, the new campus is laying the foundation for further growth, while at the same time prioritising the well-being of employees. The campus’s sustainable architecture reflects both the future and the rich history of the company, which is famous for household brands such as Nivea and Eucerin. A core element of the campus is the skin research centre. With a team of over 700 scientists, it is an integral part of Beiersdorf’s global research and development network. Fields of work include active ingredient and microbiome research, skin ageing processes, and safety assessment methods. State-of-the-art technologies and AI systems support the analysis of skin-specific metabolic processes and help develop new product solutions. Beiersdorf’s onsite Study Center also plays an important role here as it conducts more than 300 research studies with around 8,000 participants annually. Studies range from simple tests in “hot rooms” to assess the performance of deodorants to complex laser microscopy to analyse the effectiveness of skin-smoothing products.

Situated in the Lokstedt quarter, the Troplowitzstrasse commercial site lies at the centre of the Eimsbüttel district, which comprises some of Hamburg’s most densely populated neighbourhoods. Elegant historic buildings, beautiful parks, numerous educational facilities as well as attractive new building projects provide diverse housing options for local staff, while companies can benefit from easy access to skilled professionals. Following a multi-stage citizen participation process as well as a tender for urban development and open space planning, a new, modern urban quarter is to be created on the former site of Beiersdorf’s Werk1 premises. The “Stadtmacherei Eimsbüttel” development project will include a broad range of housing types alongside spaces for small businesses. Development is scheduled to start once the Beiersdorf Campus is completed and Beiersdorf Manufacturing Hamburg has stepped up its activities. The new residential quarter has been designed with a sense of community: on an area that currently requires an corporate ID card for access, residents and guests will soon be able to enjoy new central pathways in a neighbourhood that is opening up to the surrounding area.

The Eimsbüttel/Troplowitzstrasse industrial and commercial area is home to NXP and Nexperia – two manufacturing companies that are also dedicated to research and development into chip production and chip design. In the context of their R&D efforts, they address questions such as the following: How can future vehicles be controlled autonomously using artificial intelligence? How can existing radar systems in vehicles be optimised in a way that makes them outperform the human eye? And what will the next mobile communications standard look like, which will be even more powerful than 5G? The overall aim is to expand the product portfolio with innovative, energy-efficient high-end solutions. NXP alone intends to invest around €400 million in Hamburg to expand its research and development activities, while also increasing the number of employees.
