With several renowned scientific institutions in the immediate vicinity of Schleusengraben, the Bergedorf Innovation Park offers ideal prerequisites for stakeholders from the innovation ecosystem. One of the local players here is the Fraunhofer Institute for Additive Manufacturing Technologies IAPT (formerly Laser Zentrum Nord), which helps companies transfer their innovative optical technologies from research into industrial practice.
Equipped with a wind and smart grid laboratory, the Energy Campus is dedicated to exploring new concepts in the area of energy storage. The campus is also home to the world’s only test stand for large-scale wind turbines, which is provided by the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems IWES. Moreover, an application centre of the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology ISIT is scheduled to be built here.
In an effort to provide the Bergedorf Innovation Park development with additional space and leeway, a large R&D area is currently being planned adjacent to Schleusengraben. The new R&D area will comprise space for intelligent, innovative logistics projects developed in the context of Fraunhofer IAPT and/or the Energy Campus – e.g. in the fields of 3D printing, intralogistics and distribution.
Beyond this, there are also plans to establish an incubator and technology centre aimed at bridging the gap between research institutes and companies willing to settle here, which will provide relevant services to all stakeholders involved.

Developing sustainable solutions for the social challenges of the present and the future: this is the goal of HAW Hamburg – Northern Germany's leading university when it comes to reflective practice. HAW Hamburg is dedicated to providing excellent quality in both study and teaching, while at the same time expanding its profile as a research-based university. Individuals from more than 100 countries worldwide help shape HAW Hamburg, and this diversity is a particular strength.
Fraunhofer IAPT is one of the leading institutions in the field of additive manufacturing, with core competences in AM design, AM processes and AM systems. Its focus is on industrialising additive technologies and the associated technology transfer in order to facilitate products that are entirely new and as resource-efficient as possible.
Fraunhofer ISIT is one of Europe's most modern research facilities for microelectronics and microsystems technology. At the heart of the institute are the clean room facilities, large enough not only to conduct research but also to manufacture the developed microchips on an industrial scale.
