Speaking at the opening, Fegebank, remarked: “The centre provides a state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure and will undoubtedly produce ground-breaking, innovative ideas. Fascinating approaches already exist in the field of hydrogen storage, for instance, which could be real game changers in the energy transition." Scientists in several research institutions will strive to advance research with X-ray light in combination with nano and material sciences in CXNS.
DESY opened Tuesday (April 12, 2022) its Centre for X-ray and Nano Science (CXNS) in Bahrenfeld during a ceremony attended by Katharina Fegebank, Hamburg's Senator for Science and Research, Karin Prien, Minister of Science in Schleswig-Holstein, and Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Germany's Minister for Research. The new cutting-edge, five-storey building has over 5,000 square metres of which 700 square metres are for laboratories, and 250 staff. The overall costs of EUR 18 million are being footed by the German government, the states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein as well as DESY, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and the Christian-Albrechts-University (CAU) in Kiel.

Focus on collaborations
Professor Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, who commissioned the building, noted: "By combining the competencies of DESY, Hereon and CAU, the CXNS will become a unique platform for developing and studying new materials, new sensor technologies and catalysts for chemical processes. This will allow us to develop approaches to solutions for important issues, which our society so urgently needs, and lay the foundations for the innovations of tomorrow."
