Ministry of Science, Research, Equalities and Districts backing 16 projects

The Ministry of Science, Research, Equal Opportunities and the Counties has allocated €10.2 million to 16 outstanding research projects focusing on the pressing issues of our time via the State Research Funding scheme (LFF), a press release said Monday (January 20, 2025). Each project will receive a maximum of €1 million for up to 3.5 years. LFF funding is the basis for future collaborative projects and marked the starting point for two clusters of excellence in previous funding rounds.

From AI to climate change

The research projects including those of the University of Hamburg (UHH), the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, the University of Fine Arts Hamburg (HFBK) and the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW), focus e.g., on the energy transition, climate change and AI in medicine. The funding should bolster the competitiveness of Hamburg's universities and research institutions and the city as a "beacon of science".

Springboard for collaborative projects, third-party funding and clusters of excellence

Launched in 2013, the funding scheme is at the heart of science policy in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. The amount of funds varies from €23,000 for international collaborations and  €300,000  for scientific and artistic research projects to a maximum of €1 million for research alliances and graduate colleges. Crucially, the scheme acts as a springboard for collaborative projects, additional national third-party funding and clusters of excellence. Four so-called "Hamburg X projects" are currently being funded  two of which have submitted an application for a Cluster of Excellence. Decisions are expected in May 2025.
