The funds will go towards the purchase of 472 e-buses and 700 charging stations at Hochbahn and VHH's depots. Hochbahn will receive EUR 97.3 million while EUR 59.7 million will go towards VHH as part of Hamburg's goal of replacing all diesel buses with emission-free drives. The underground and suburban trains in Hamburg have been running on environment-friendly electricity for years.
The German government has earmarked EUR 160 million in funds to convert Hamburg's public transport system to zero-emission drives by 2030. Volker Wissing, German Minister for Transport, handed over the funding notification to Henrik Falk, CEO of Hochbahn and Toralf Müller, Managing Director of Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) in early April.
New e-buses and charging stations
More sustainability and comfort thanks to electric mobility
Around 160 of 1,800 buses in Hamburg have zero-emission drives. Hochbahn and VHH have ordered only e-buses since 2020. Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport, remarked: "The switch to electric buses contributes to climate and health protection and increases comfort for passengers. That makes public transport in Hamburg even more attractive and is thus part of the mobility transition in our city."
