Hamburg’s minister tops 2022 ranking of German Science Ministers

Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality has been named Science Minister 2022 by the German Association of Universities and Colleges (DHV) after topping the ranking in 2020 as well, a press release said Thursday (March 23, 2023). Around 2,400 academics had voted online for her after rating science ministers throughout Germany. Fegebank, who hails from Hamburg, scored 2.72 points and thus the highest mark. The award will be presented during the Science Gala in early April.

Award for Hamburg as a centre of science

Fegebank remarked: "I am very pleased to receive this award, which I gladly accept on Hamburg's behalf and as a centre of science." The city's higher education system has acted coherently in many crises as science and innovation continue to shape the future backed by the senate's years-long efforts.

"The universities have been expanded, the University of Hamburg has been recognized as a university of excellence with its 'flagship university' concept, and Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld is being created in close co-operation with universities and non-university research institutions as an innovative, forward-looking district that will shine far beyond Hamburg," she added.

Ranking procedure

DHV surveyed 2,388 academics between November 7 and December 2022 who marked science ministers from one (best) to six (worst). Most averaged a score of 3.38. Professor D. Armin Willingmann, Science Minister in Saxony Anhalt, came second followed by Theresia Bauer, former Science Minister in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Only ministers who had been in office for at least 100 days when the survey began were rated or their predecessors in the case of those who did not meet the criteria.
