“Festivals and cultural events are precisely the places to reach people and drive change without any bans or finger-wagging," said Wiebke Schumacher, Manager of the Future 2 Festival. Fans can look forward to plenty of music, fun and sustainability with live acts and DJs spinning a mix of R&B, ambient sounds and techno. The performances will be broadcast on headphones from 10pm. Electricity for the entire festival will be generated on site from several solar systems with battery storage. Festival-goers can also do their bit and pedal for power on electricity-generating bicycles. Organisers are also using reusable dishes in line with the zero-waste strategy for the vegetarian and vegan food on offer. Plenty of bicycle parking spaces should allow people to reach the venue in a climate-friendly manner. All these aspects form part of the Morgenwelt agency's bid to host more green events in Hamburg.
The City of Hamburg is gearing up for the Futur 2 Festival in Elbpark Entenwerder with lots of music and fun, sponsored by the Ministry for the Environment on May 24 and 25. Organisers are keen to prove festivals can be both sustainable and self-sufficient by using electricity from renewable energy sources, reusing dishes and selling only vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Hamburg to host more events sustainably
The #moinzukunft mile offers stakeholders in the sustainability sector and NGOs a platform to showcase solutions for a sustainable society. The Futur 2 Festival won the European Cultural Brand Award in 2020 for its exemplary organisation. "The festival generated little waste, chose sustainable catering and used electricity from solar panels and pedal power thereby proving that celebrating and conserving resources are by no means mutually exclusive," said Michael Pollmann, State Councillor. The idea behind the festival goes with Hamburg’s strategy of organising events sustainably. "As a city, we are leading the way with a bundle of measures and also see this as a signal to the event industry."
