4 March 2025
Experiencing research in European XFEL's Lighthouse Visitor Centre - Dr Arwen Cross, Co-ordinator, in conversation

The Hamburg Metropolitan Region is home to a superlative research facility that sends 27,000 ultra-short flashes of light per second. The world's largest X-ray laser, the European XFEL, stretches 3.4 kilometres underground from DESY in west Hamburg to Schenefeld in Schleswig-Holstein. Scientists from all corners of the globe conduct basic research that affects us all and focuses on energy, climate and health. Science becomes tangible in XFEL. In our latest Future Hamburg Talk, Dr Arwen Cross, Coordinator of the Lighthouse Visitor Centre, opened in late 2024, gives insight into research and life on campus and how to inspire the next generation of scientists.
