Busan in southeast Korea is the seventh largest port in the world and one of Hamburg's key trading partners. The Hanseatic-Korean understanding foresees closer co-operation in art, culture, tourism, education, administration as well as science and research. South Korea was also the partner country of the Port of Hamburg's 834th anniversary celebrations this year.
Mayors sign "Memorandum of Understanding"
Dr Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg, and his counterpart Park Heong-joon, Mayor of Busan in South Korea, signed a Memorandum of Understanding Thursday (May 4, 2023) forging closer co-operation on smart green cities, climate protection and the digitalisation of their respective ports. The Port of Busan has a population 3.5 million and is the second largest city in South Korea. Both cities have worked closely in the port industry and at parliamentary level since 2013.

Sustainable urban development
A second Memorandum of Understanding was signed on May 6, 2023 on closer urban development by Park, Joon-suk Kang, President of the Busan Port Authority, and Dr Andreas Kleinau of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH. The Busan Port North Redevelopment Area is now underway on former port land similar to HafenCity in Hamburg. The understanding foresees sharing knowledge and experiences on urban development strategies. Emphasis is on digitalized, resource-efficiency planning and construction.
