Hamburg earmarks EUR 22 million for outdoor summer of culture

Open-air events from July to August to reopen cultural sector

Cultural institutions and organisers of artistic events have until May 19, 2021 to apply for funds for this year's summer of culture (July 15 to August). An independent jury will select the recipients. Artists, who wish to take part in the outdoor, coronavirus-compliant summer of culture, can apply in June. This comes after the senate approved Thursday (May 6, 2021) EUR 22 million in funds for cultural institutions and artists hit by the pandemic, the Ministry for Culture and Media said.

Diverse outdoor events in summer

"We want to create an urgently-needed perspective though the summer of culture for the scene and the people of Hamburg who have had to do without live cultural experiences for a long time," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. The upcoming events include open-air pop concerts, movie screenings, outdoor exhibitions and theatre performances. The scheme should give especially independent artists opportunities to perform and present their work to audiences again. "This impulse for culture is important to keep cultural places alive as they are indispensable for society," Brosda added. More details about events and venues will be released as part of a campaign by the ministry, Hamburg Marketing GmbH and Hamburg Tourismus GmbH.

Other cultural projects

The city will also put monies from the "New Start Funds" towards other cultural projects and institutions this year and relaunch coronavirus-related aid, which proved its worth last year. Andreas Dressel, Senator for Finance, remarked: "We want to use every possible means of support to find ways of gradually rebuilding and securing Hamburg's colourful cultural landscape in the long term." More than half a million euros has been earmarked for cultural education in schools across Hamburg this year, the senate announced. The "Culture & School" project has been set up in co-operation with various Hamburg-based foundations and promotes collaborations between schools and artists.
