Hamburg speeds up switch to zero-emission taxis

16 January 2025
New regulations to bring more "Future Taxis" to Hamburg's streets - new registrations only for zero-emission taxis and rental cars

Taxis and rental cars with combustion engines can no longer be registered from January 2025. The City of Hamburg is offering financial support to ease the switch to zero-emission taxis early. Taxi companies can apply for third stage funding and for the environmental bonus with subsidies of to up to EUR 5,000 per vehicle.

Almost 700 e-taxis on roads

Nearly 700 fully electric taxis are now on roads across Hamburg and have saved over 11,000 tonnes of CO2 since the project began in 2021. The Climate Protection Act, passed in December 2023, is expected to push the figures even higher. From January 2025, only zero-emission taxis and rental cars can be registered in Hamburg. This will apply to large taxis (over eight seats) and specially equipped vehicles, e.g. ,for transporting wheelchairs, from January 2027. Vehicles registered by taxi companies before these dates can continue to be used regardless of their engine type.

Expanding charging infrastructure

Parallel to the amended law, Hamburg is also investing in 12 charging points at taxi ranks in the city. The number is set to rise  to 40 taxi charging points. Site  owners and providers of charging infrastructure  will be eligible for up to EUR 10,000 per charging point.
