The conference will seek to address issues such as encouraging businesses to invest in sustainability, reforming global finance, building sustainable cities and green transport. "The HSC provides a platform to forge urgently-needed new alliances because only through international co-operation can we meet the great challenges of our time," said Svenja Schulze, German Development Minister and member of the HSC Council. Launched by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Michael Otto Foundation and the City of Hamburg, the conference aims to develop concrete solutions, e.g., for a sustainable energy transition and a fairer financial system.
Conference (October 7-8, 2024) to forge global alliances for Agenda 2030
Global leaders, business representatives, academics and society will come together for the first Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC), underway from October 7-8 in the Chamber of Commerce and City Hall under the auspices of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The aim is to forge new strategies and partnerships to advance the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This comes against the backdrop of wars, climate change and growing global inequality and thus a pressing need for investments in security and sustainable development. Topics on the agenda include reforming the international financial system, promoting investments in SDGs and transformative change. The HSC is being held in co-operation with the German Society for International Cooperation and the German Institute for Development and Sustainability.
Boosting global co-operation
Environment-friendly shipping and aviation
Key discussion points include reforms of multilateral development banks, international commitments on green shipping and aviation, and resilient food systems in emerging and developing countries. A new regulatory framework for AI, progressive taxation and carbon pricing initiatives are also on the agenda. Selected sessions will be streamed live on HSC’s website. Several public events have been organised by local civil society initiatives on sustainable culture, education, business, science or policy.
Bringing Hamburg into sustainable future
“As a climate-friendly, economically buoyant and internationally well-connected city, Hamburg is the ideal venue for HSC,” said Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg. "The City of Hamburg is one of the most important research and business centres in Germany. We are home to big companies and institutions that are paving the way for a sustainable future. Hamburg has an ambitious strategy and excellent global networks in business, science and culture." Three leading energy trade fairs will transform Hamburg into an international forum for the energy transition and sustainability this autumn.
