Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG pushing ahead with sustainability strategy forward

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) put two new electrically powered trucks into operation at its freight forwarding company Container-Transport-Dienst GmbH (CTD) in early June. The test phase is initially limited to container transfers in the Port of Hamburg. The switch to electro mobility should advance the decarbonisation of logistics chains.

E-trucks - another step towards climate neutrality

Angela Titzrath, Managing Director of HHLA, remarked: "The launch of the new electric trucks is another decisive step for HHLA on the road to a more climate-friendly future.” HHLA is aiming for climate-neutral production by 2040. During the current test phase, emphasis is on  the efficiency of the Volvo FH Electric trucks and the performance of the charging cycles. The trucks are fitted with a 540 kWh battery and a maximum charge capacity of 250 kW and can cover 260 to 340 kilometres when fully charged.

HHLA implements sustainability strategy

HHLA has strived to decarbonise its facilities and equipment for many years. Electrically powered container gantry cranes, automated guided vehicles and tractor units are used in many of its terminals across Europe. As part of the Clean Port & Logistics cluster, HHLA is also examining the use of hydrogen-powered equipment in tandem with its partners and comparing this equipment to electric, battery-powered devices. HHLA's rail subsidiary, Metrans, began using and testing electric trucks for container transport in 2022. The company hopes to offer its customers completely climate-friendly transport from a single source as a mix of green road and rail transport offers significant added value.
