Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival comes to Hamburg

Japanese firms will stage a fireworks display on May 22 in praise of Hamburg’s hospitality and to mark the start of the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival held annually since 1968. As part of the festival, the German-Japanese Society, the Japanese General Consulate and the Department of Japanese Language and Culture at the University of Hamburg will hold a Japanese Day of Culture on June 4 in co-operation with the District Office Hamburg-Mitte. Hamburg will also host the 17th Japanese Film Festival from June 8 -12, 2016 for moviegoers and fans of all things Japanese.

According to the German-Japanese Society in Hamburg: “To Japanese companies, Hamburg is a dynamic economic centre and one of the most important locations in Europe. The port is a leading logistical hub in northern Europe and the infrastructure is extremely favourable to Japanese.” More than 100 Japanese firms including 25 European headquarters and the German headquarters of 35 large groups and trading companies are located in Hamburg.

Many Hamburg-based companies do business in Japan. Last week, the Hamburg-based shipping company Hapag Lloyd said it intends forging a new alliance with five Asian partners including three Japanese shipping companies to boost international competitiveness.

Cherry blossoms have huge symbolic importance for Japanese as the flower embodies the start of spring and stands for awakening and new beginnings as well as fragile beauty. The festival has been celebrated annually in Hamburg since 1968. During the 1960s, the Japanese community and firms based in Hamburg gifted the city 5,000 cherry trees which were planted along the banks of the Alster, the Kennedybrücke, Alsterkrugchaussee and at Altonaer Balkon.
