Emphasis is on reducing the use of materials, recyclable parts and less waste for more sustainability. The Food Zero Waste app by Lufthansa Industry Solutions uses artificial intelligence to measure any food left by passengers on their trays and makes suggestions for the next catering plan based on this information. Airbus Operations and the Austrian cabin outfitter F/List focus on bio-based side panels to natural linoleum flooring and plant-based leather.
Urban Air Mobility trending - awards to be presented in June
The Hamburg Aviation Cluster has announced the shortlist for this year's Crystal Cabin Awards with ideas for more comfort, cabin concepts for air taxis, flying without barriers and privacy. The awards will be presented in eight categories on June 6, 2023 during the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg and come amid resurging passenger numbers with 11 million passing through Hamburg Airport in 2022.

Barrier-free aviation and privacy
Several contestants are focusing on barrier-free aviation this year and two universities in the United States have entered ideas to make flying safer for wheelchair users. Urban Air Mobility is a priority this year as exemplified by Supernal’s concept in co-operation with Formation Design Group. The concept includes ideas for barrier-free use of air taxis from gate to exit.
Contestants have also entered many ideas for "electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing aircraft" (eVTOL). EVE Mobility and Almadesign have entered a sleek, airy four-seater cabin concept for Eve Air Mobility, a daughter brand of aircraft manufacturer Embraer. Elements such as ceiling projection and pleasant colour moods make the short flight as comfortable as possible.
Hyundai Transys and Priestman Goode, for instance, want to give passengers more privacy despite limited space in the air cabin. Privacy during important meetings above the clouds is the premise of Skyted's noise-cancelling mask. The novel face covering was developed with PriestmanGoode, Airbus Development, the European Space Agency Accelerator Program and ONERA.
Jury to select finalists in June
This year’s submissions include many innovations for optimum use of space in the aircraft, especially on long-haul flights. Air New Zealand’s Skynest presents the option of a real, flat bed that long-haul travellers can sleep in when flying, for instance, on the Auckland-Vancouver route. The bunk beds are installed in sleep islands in the middle section of the aircraft and can be booked for time slots. Around 80 ideas have been shortlisted for the Crystal Cabin Awards 2023. A jury of 28 experts will announce the finalists in June.
