"Our scientific efforts, particularly in the areas of inflammation research and neuronal research, will still be supported for which we are very grateful," said Prof Dr, Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro, UKE Board Member and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr Stefano Panzeri, Nucleus Professor for Neural Information Processing, and his team are working on mathematical models of neuron networks to understand why the networking between different areas of the brain changes. The "Brainamics" project is set to receive over EUR 2 million in funds from an ERC Consolidator Grant of of which UKE will receive over EUR 207,000. The "Adapt" research project led by Prof Dr Nicola Gagliani, professor of Gastrointestinal Carciogenesis, is set to receive EUR 2 million in funds from an ERC Consolidator Grant. The project focuses on investigating organ-specific mechanisms that favour the development of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.
European Research Council providing ERC grants
The European Research Council has announced three grants totalling over EUR 3.7 million for cutting-edge medical research at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The funds benefit five-year research projects focussing on immune-mediated inflammatory diseases and brain research, a press release said Thursday (November 23, 2023).
ERC grants for inflammation and brain research
ERC Starting Grant for young scientists
Knowledge of how different parts of the brain exchange information is key to understanding the changes in brain activity in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. The "Olfaction" project led by Dr Sebastian Bitzenhofer at the Centre for Molecular Neurosciences Hamburg (ZMNH), who was awarded the ERC Starting Grant for early career researchers, is dedicated to this research.
