Altona to hold climate-friendly industrial park

Hamburg Wasser, Stromnetz Hamburg and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein planning new industrial park

Hamburg Wasser (HW), Stromnetz Hamburg (SNH) and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein (VHH) have announced plans to build a climate-friendly industrial park on the disused Stellinger Moor sewage treatment plant in Altona, a press release said Wednesday (February 8, 2023). The park is being built on behalf of the senate with emphasis on climate-friendly building materials, photovoltaic systems for energy supply, heat from renewable energies as well as green roofs and façades. The park will also accommodate depots by SNH and VHH. A joint utilisation concept and overview of the design are now available.

Transitioning public transport

"The plans by four urban companies to build a climate-neutral industrial park is a great example of modern and efficient land use and an important pillar of transitioning public transport," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport. Charging infrastructure for 250 VHH e-buses will be installed in the new park to ensure that buses and train run emission-free by 2030. "The project shows that we can implement important infrastructure projects in a resource-friendly manner in the heart of Hamburg," he added. Stadtreinigung Hamburg is building a Centre for Resources and Energy (ZRE) nearby and will be part of the overall energy supply concept. The industrial park is set to become an urban infrastructure and mobility hub in a densely populated part of Hamburg.

Long-term use of industrial park

Employees of HW, SNH and VHH will have access to shared internal transport routes, bicycle infrastructure, workshops, social rooms and parking areas, as well as a hydrogen filling station and charging points for electric cars. Synergies in project planning are also possible. HW and SNH signed a contract for a joint depot in 2022 thereby laying the foundation for the industrial park which is set to last at least 60 years. VHH will be responsible for managing the project and will integrate the depots by 2029.
