German government earmarks EUR 3.3 million in funds for chronobiological lighting project

The "Chronolite" project led the by Hamburg-based Jetlite has received EUR 3.3 million in funds from the German Ministry of Digital and Transport through December 2024. Jetlite, a member of Hamburg Aviation, is heading a nationwide consortium of companies and research institutions working on an industry standard for chronobiologically effective lighting to bring people's natural inner clocks back into sync, to improve well-being and to prevent sleep-wake cycle disorders.

Germany in international contest

Dr Volker Wissing, Germany's Minister for Digital and Transport, noted: "Artificial Intelligence is a key technology for the digital transformation. Germany has to compete internationally for the best ideas and successful business models of the future in this field. Therefore, we are funding the wide-spread use of AI and helping research establishments, businesses and start-ups to connect." Eleven AI projects have received EUR 48 million in funds from the German government as part of an innovation offensive called "Artificial Intelligence in Mobility". The ministry is also working on improved framework conditions for innovations in Germany.

Project initiated by Jetlite

As part of Chronolite, industrial companies and research institutes are developing an Internet of Things industry standard for chronobiologically effective lighting in the mobility sector and related life contexts. The consortium also includes the automotive supplier HELLA from Lippstadt, the Technical University of Ilmenau, Dreitausendsassa GmbH from Hamburg, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Institut für experimentelle Psychophysiologie GmbH from Düsseldorf and HMKW Hochschule für Medien, Kommunikation und Wirtschaft from Berlin.
