The share of the health care sector increased by 1.4 per cent over the past decade, according to figures published by the German Ministry of Economics for 2020. At EUR 11.6 billion, the sector now generates more than 10 per cent of Hamburg's total economic output and is among the main economic drivers.
The health care sector employs some 200,000 staff and accounts for 15.5 per cent of the total labour market in the city. The number of employees has increased by an average 2.6 per cent year-on-year since 2011. That corresponds to significantly stronger growth than in Hamburg's overall labour market (1.2 per cent per year) and than in the national health care industry (1.6 per cent per year).
