HHLA sets up hydrogen test field in Port of Hamburg

“A flagship project for using hydrogen in port logistics has been set up in co-operation with the Clean Port & Logistics cluster in the Port of Hamburg," said Volker Wissing, Germany’s Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport. Forward-looking technologies can now be tested and data collected and analysed from the test field. "In this way, we are shaping the future of logistics sustainably and continuing to invest in innovative technologies," said Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA. The provision of the infrastructure should accelerate the transition to zero-emission logistics and port operations. Equipment such as empty container stackers, forklifts, tractors and lorries can now be refuelled with green hydrogen at 350 bar. Public access to filling stations gives other companies an opportunity to decarbonise their procedures and to test climate-friendly transport.

HHLA has developed solutions with the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster and over 40 partner companies worldwide to bring hydrogen-powered heavy duty vehicles and terminal equipment to market maturity. The concepts for operation, safety, maintenance, refuelling and supply are to be tested and optimised in the new test field. HHLA is aiming to decarbonise the logistics sector and to reach climate-neutral production throughout the group by 2040. As part of its “Balance Logistics” sustainability strategy, the company is focussing on the electrification of its facilities and equipment across Europe. As hydrogen can significantly enhance the decarbonisation of logistics, HHLA is also involved in the import and sale of hydrogen for heavy duty vehicles.
