Around 1.1 million arriving and departing passengers used Hamburg Airport in May marking a 68 per cent increase over 2019. The surge in demand was particularly evident from May 26-29, 2022 and on bank holidays when up to 45,000 daily passengers used the airport. Many travellers flew to holiday destinations such as Majorca, Greece, Turkey or the Canary Islands. Around 3.5 million passengers passed through the airport between January and May 2022.
More than one million passengers used Hamburg Airport in May compared to a mere 680,000 in March. The 60 per cent, rapid surge in traffic exceeded expectations and comes after lockdowns and travel restrictions, a press release said Tuesday (June 7, 2022).
High passenger volumes
Demand surged in May
"The month of May was the strongest month in over two years. Demand jumped in the last two months. After the long travel break, we can again offer our passengers a choice of 115 destinations. This variety also attracts many northern Germans from neighbouring states," said Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport. "This surge in demand poses major challenges for air transport throughout Europe. The main focus is on the difficult personnel planning and recruitment. We and our partners are making the best possible preparations for the coming weeks, during which we expect many passengers. However, we cannot rule out the possibility of delays and irregularities. We urge all passengers to allow significantly more time than usual and to prepare well with our five travel tips."
