The figures contrast with 3,060 closures in 2024 which increased 13.6 per cent over 2023. Yet, the balance of new businesses and closures remained "clearly positive", according to Statistics North. Overall, there were 2,857 more businesses than closures. An average three businesses were founded for every 1,000 inhabitants. The rate varies between 1.5 in Bergedorf and 6.8 in Hamburg-Mitte. The number of new companies rose by almost half in Hamburg-Nord based on the population in December 2023.
Statistical Office North confirms new high - more female founders
A record 5,917 new businesses were founded in 2024 - an increase of 4.5 per cent over 2023, according to the Statistical Office North. This marks a new high since surveys began in 2008.

Some 14,017 enterprises were created as sole proprietorships in 2024. More than 35.4 per cent of these were registered by women - the highest since 35.7 per cent in 2011. And 10.7 per cent of businesses founded by women were "economically significant". The remainder were small business or side enterprises, putting women almost on a par with men, who accounted for a slightly higher share of 12.4 per cent. Around 29.1 per cent of entrepreneurs are foreign nationals.
