"We have an extremely attractive location here, which we are further advancing with Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld," said Michael Westhagemann, Senator for Economics. "By networking science and business, we are creating a strong basis for driving innovation for our society. It is precisely in such an environment that new companies with forward-looking business models, more jobs and vibrant neighbourhoods are created."
The senate has set aside EUR 700,00 in funds for the expansion of the Start-up Labs Bahrenfeld. DESY, the City of Hamburg and the University of Hamburg are creating around 25 additional laboratory workplaces and 20 office workplaces on the DESY campus near the existing Start-up Labs Bahrenfeld building for start-ups in the life sciences.

Great demand for lab space in wet area
Start-ups' demands for complex laboratories and office space in Hamburg exceeds the supply. "We received several enquiries every month that we were no longer able to meet after a short. while. The bottleneck was always the availability of lab space, especially in wet lab areas, i.e. for biological or chemical applications," said Denny Droßmann, Managing Director of Start-up Labs Bahrenfeld.
Long-term expansion plans in several places
The expansion of Start-up Labs Bahrenfeld comes barely a year after its opening last summer and reflects the appeal of the innovation ecosystem on DESY's campus. Containers will be used for around five years and will be operated by the Innovationszentrum Forschungscampus Hamburg-Bahrenfeld which is also responsible for the Start-up Labs. The existing infrastructure will be used. Construction will go ahead in November 2022.
The tecHHub, which is scheduled to open in 2023 in the Altona Innovation Park, and the DESY Innovation Factory, which is due to open on the DESY campus in 2025, will also meet the additional demand for laboratory and office space from start-ups in the biotechnology industry. The additional facilities will create more places for transferring developments and findings from science to industry.
