Record number of start-ups since 2008 - highest share of women founders in ten years

More than 3,800 businesses were set up across Hamburg in the first nine months of 2021 which comes to an increase of around 17 per cent over the same period in 2020. The record figures are the highest since 2008, according to the Statistical Office North.

Highest share of women founders in ten years

Catch-up effects after the pandemic-induced restrictions are among the reasons for the increase in start-ups, the office said. The number of business closures increased by 9.8 per cent over the same period in 2020. However, business start-ups exceeded closures by 1,695 registrations. For every 1,000 inhabitants, a total of two new businesses were founded in Hamburg. The rate was highest in Hamburg-Mitte at 3.3 and lowest in Bergedorf (0.7). Women submitted around 35 per cent of business registrations under sole proprietorships making for the highest share of female entrepreneurs since 2011.
