"UKE has managed to reduce the workload for employees through Work 5.0 and make working hours more flexible in line with their respective life phases as well as increasing employee satisfaction and health," said Ute Düvelius, Head of Recruitment and Retention at UKE. Launched in 2019, the work model was tested on selected wards for six months from autumn 2021 and has now been established on all of UKE’s somatic wards. Under the three-shift system, employees can take on short shifts or work longer shifts in a row to save more days off.
The University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) has won the "German Demography Award" in the "Future of Work" category, presented by the Demography Network e. V. (ddn), a press release said Monday (June 17, 2024). The award honours UKE’s Work 5.0 model to give nurses and carers a better work-life balance. UKE had introduced voluntary, flexible shifts backed by the Techniker Krankenkasse insurer.
New work model relieves nursing staff
New work models needed amid demographic change
Given ongoing demographic change, the "German Demography Prize 2024" highlights the importance of UKE’s work model. It is a pioneering step towards new incentives in nursing professions and closes the skills gap in the industry. The award is presented annually in six categories: Diversity, Working Together, Learning, Sustainability, Health and Future of Work. A special "NextPractice" award honours particularly forward-looking projects.
