"We are pleased to announce that our work on Hamburg’s waterways will be done with zero-emission vessels in future," said Stefan Klotz, Managing Director of the State Roads, Bridges and Waterways Authority (LSBG). The company had helped Flotte Hamburg purchase the new 16-metre-long vessels which will be used for transport and inspections mainly on the Alster lakes and in the Port of Hamburg. The expansion of the e-portfolio is a milestone towards the zero-emission concept, which Flotte Hamburg had drawn up with the Hamburg University of Technology.
Flotte Hamburg, a subsidiary of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), has ordered two fully electric vessels from the Hermann Barthel GmbH shipyard at a cost of EUR 8 million. The upgrade is expected to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility, as the vessels will be equipped with zero-emission engines.

The new vessels are in line the senate's zero-emission Alster shipping regulation, under which all vessels with combustion engines are to be converted to e-driven-green electricity by 2030. "As a pioneer, we want to show that zero-emission shipping is possible and is now being achieved in ports and inner-city areas," said Karsten Schönewald, Managing Director of Flotte Hamburg. The city is also pushing ahead with an ambitious roadmap for the urban mobility transition on land including the “Digital Mobility Strategy".
