"We can turn the inner city into a place where urban society meets and learns from each other in the ‘House of the Digital World’," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. The approximately 60,000 square metre building will offer sufficient space for a variety of uses and a public library and multi-use rooms. The aim is to create a building for everyone and a place where people can experience the digital future. The plans foresee spaces for collaborative work, education, leisure and culture. The ‘Hamburg Service vor Ort’ will also move into the building.nsectetur adipiscing elit. Nam mollis lorem ac consectetur pellentesque. Residents of Hamburg will soon be able to meet in the new "House of the Digital World" in the city centre to experience the digital future. This comes after the Ministry of Finance's State Office for Real Estate Management and Property (LIG) purchased a building on Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz 50 for some EUR 112.5 million, a press release said Wednesday (February 26, 2025). The German government is putting up to EUR 36 million towards the new centre. Based on a feasibility study, the Hamburger Öffentliche Bücherhallen Foundation, Hamburg Adult Education Centre andthe Ministry of Culture and Media are now drafting plans for the "House of the Digital World".

Preparing central Hamburg for future
The new building's location should prepare central Hamburg for the future, according to Karen Pein, Senator for Urban Development and Housing. The feasibility study by Christoph Ingenhoven Architects had rated the property as suitable and plans are being laid for the next construction phase. "The purchase itself is not a burden on the budget, and we can also draw on federal funds for the conversion," said Andreas Dressel, Senator for Finance and Chairman of the LIG Board of Directors. However, the costs are subject to the approval by the city council.
