Hamburg pleased with Summer of Culture

9 August 2021
Some 850 events held so far under "Play it loud" motto - another 950 events scheduled until August 16

The City of Hamburg has drawn a positive interim balance of the "Summer of Culture" underway from July 15-August 16, 2021. The entire city is in a "veritable cultural frenzy", according to the Ministry of Culture. The cultural revival comes after months of pandemic-induced restrictions dealt a severe blow to the sector. Most of the 850 events held so far especially those at weekends have met with a great public response, organisers said. A total of 1,800 events including concerts on large and small stages, theatre, art performances and readings are being held outdoors under the motto of "Play it Loud.

More than 950 events yet to be held

"Culture in Hamburg is alive and kicking again. At the moment it's almost impossible to overlook the 'Summer of Culture'  and that's a good thing. Over the coming weeks, plenty of events that will make you want to visit the cultural city of Hamburg well after the summer remain to be discovered," said Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. Around 950 events have yet to be held, he added. Highlights include the Hamburg Theatre Open Air at the Rathausmarkt and the Kampnagel Summer Festival at unusual locations across the city.

Multifaceted events

The itinerary also includes festivals lasting several days, exhibitions as well as film screenings for children and youths. The venues range from town halls, public squares, church gardens, parks, steamboats on Lake Alster, pontoons on the Fleet to shop windows. An overview of events can be found on the Kultursommer website. Under the theme of "Play it Loud", artists, organisers and cultural institutions are receiving plenty of support for the relaunch of their businesses. An independent jury has selected over 100 out of 220 multifaceted ideas for funding.
