HY-5 presented 27 large-scale hydrogen projects in the five states, selected by the German Ministry for Economics and the Ministry for Transport for funding as part of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) scheme. Michael Westhagemann, Senator for Economics and Innovation, remarked: "Northern Germany is among the global pioneers of this future technology and aims to set up the  infrastructure for a green hydrogen economic sector by 2035. Given its concentrated know-how along the entire value chain and proximity to the most efficient renewable energy regions, Hamburg is ideal for developing new business models that focus on sustainably produced hydrogen."

North Germany and north England to use synergies

Representatives of HY-5 and the British Department for International Trade held bilateral talks on creating synergies, opportunities for co-operation and growth during the conference. Both northern Germany and northern England have set themselves the goal of becoming leading hubs of green hydrogen and along the entire value chain. Both regions presented themselves as promising water locations to companies, investors and policy makers. "England's 'Northern Powerhouse' hosts some of the most advanced hydrogen projects in Britain, while northern Germany is becoming a continental powerhouse for the use and production of green hydrogen," said Kathryn Boyd, a representative of the department, adding: "We need to join forces and work on securing clean energy independence.
