Agreement foresees closer links in business, science, research and culture - holds huge potential for expansion

Dr Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg and Martine Biron, Minister of International Relations in the Canadian province of Québec, signed Tuesday (February 20, 2024) a strategic partnership on networking public and private institutions and forging closer ties in business, science, research and culture.

More joint projects

The partnership paves the way for new joint projects. "This is the first cooperation agreement of its kind in Hamburg's foreign relations and indicates strongly that major cities and progressive regions can boost international co-operation." The partnership goes beyond existing agreements and is project-based, time-limited and results-orientated and is concluded with cities that have similar economic, scientific and cultural priorities.

Existing successful links between Hamburg and Québec

"Hamburg and Québec are a good match. We already cooperate in business and research and place joint demands on the energy transition and digitalisation," said Tschentscher. Last June, the Hamburg Centre for Applied Aeronautical Research (ZAL) and the Consortium de Recherche et d'Innovation en Aérospatiale au Québec (CRIAQ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on aerospace research and technology projects. The latest collaboration foresees e.g.,  joint productions by the planetariums of Hamburg and Montréal, the continued participation of Québec Cinéma in the Hamburg Film Festival, residencies for artists in dance and choreography, as well as exhibitions by German and Canadian artists in virtual reality and immersion.
